Keep your Eyes Open

Sometimes, what sounds ordinary can be a sign that something is wrong.

Victims of violence do not always ask for help directly.

Their words can be subtle, and the signs are often easy to miss.

Every year, an estimated 15% of Europeans or 75 million people in the European Union fall victim to crime.

The EU works continuously to ensure that victims receive the support and protection they need, everywhere in the EU, but real change also depends on all of us recognising victims, listening without judgment, and helping ensure that no one has to face the aftermath of crime alone.

This is the purpose of the Keep your Eyes Open campaign.

The campaign raises awareness of victims' rights and encourages everyone to stay alert, recognise when someone may need help, and understand how they can offer support.

The messages you may see on stickers, posters or in public spaces are part of this campaign. They invite you to pause, trust your instinct, and look beyond first impressions.

If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it.

What you can do

  • Pay attention to what people say, and what they don't say directly
  • Stay present and offer support
  • Help them find the right information and support services
